Welcome to Zakynthos
This is the most southerly of the Ionian islands and,
although Greek holidaymakers managed to keep it a closely guarded secret for a
long time, it is now the most visited by tourists after Corfu. It is nicknamed
the 'Flower of the Levant' because of its flowers and climate. At the end of the
18th century it was the richest of the Ionian islands, but its wealth had its
disadvantage. The Venetians exploited the local population to such an extent
that in 1797, when the French took control of the Ionian islands, an association
of radical Jacobins was created. In a great burst of revolutionary zeal the
members carried out a public burning in one of the capital's squares of the
'Gold Book' in which the titles of the Venetian nobility appeared.
Zakynthos has two major drawbacks: numerous British travel agencies place block
bookings on rooms for the whole year, which makes it difficult to find anywhere
to stay; and the roads do not really follow the coastline, so it is sometimes
tricky to the island's most attractive beaches. The best beaches are : Porto
Zorro, Porto Roma, Gerakas Beach, Dafni Beach, Laganas, Ampoula Beach, Makrys
Yialos Beach and Korithi. The north and the center of the island are the most
inaccessible, but the mountainous landscapes of the interior are superb.
